I found your blog the other day and I’ve been devouring up all your posts- thank you for this! 9 resonates with me the most, it’s all about the journey
Saying no is so real. Discernment is so important, and taking the wrong gig or collaborating with the wrong people can harm your growth. You've got to know your worth.
Oof #5 brought up some rough memories. Season 1 of my first show I had to move back in with my parents and all of my friends were so confused. Aren’t you rich now? And you have to explain the economics of Hollywood to hungover firefighters.
This is all extremely true. I was a print journalist in the 90s in Chicago. A “screenwriter” in Columbia College Film school for 3 years at the end of those. When I hit LA in 2000 as part of my college’s Semester in LA program my late mentor smartly brought in pitch coaches for a week! Changed all of our perspectives. By the end of the class I was back as a journalist for Variety for 4 years. Screenwriting was going to be more selling myself than being creative so I bailed for a job I knew I would actually write at and see my byline every day! Excellent POST and will be reposting!
Thank you for your insight. I have felt quite despondent lately about not yet 'breaking in' as a writer, in spite of favourable, recent comp results - but it's my true passion and I need to follow it. There was a whole lot more couch in that comment than I intended haha - have a great day!
